Experimental Helmet for Dementia Therapy with Infrared Light
According to news reports from the UK, an experimental “helmet” is being tested by scientists there as a possible treatment for dementia. The helmet purports to deliver low levels of infrared light through the skull to the brain, which the scientists believe may stimulate the growth of brain cells. Tests in middle-aged mice (but not older mice, and not model Alzheimer mice) showed that full body exposure to infrared light (not through a helmet) improved their working memory. Trials of around a 100 people with age-related memory problems will now look to see if the results seen in mice can be replicated in people. This research is very, very preliminary and before we any conclusions or recommendations can be made, the results of a large-scale clinical trials in people must be conducted.
